Stop Overcomplicating Your Book—This Simple Framework Works

Writing a book doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s a step-by-step method to make the process easier and actually finish your draft.

Years ago, in my twenties, a friend and I decided to write a book about our experiences in Dubai - we’d both moved to the city in 2004 and were having an absolute blast meeting new people and experiencing a new culture. We worked hard and partied harder, as one does in your twenties.

We had lots of stories to tell, but as we stared at the blank screen on my laptop, we felt stuck.

  • Where should we start?

  • What should be the main idea?

  • What should the title be?

And on and on it went, until we decided to open a bottle of wine for inspiration, which then led to us getting ready for a night out…I’m sure I don’t need to tell you the book didn’t get written.

Fast forward to today, after writing three novels, and the blank page can still send me into a panic.

Now, it’s more about lack of time and feeling overwhelmed, but over the years, I’ve developed my own framework that breaks down the process into manageable pieces.

In fact, studies show that breaking a large project down into manageable tasks can increase productivity by 25%. It also reduces stress and improves focus (so there’s no need for wine!)

The #1 Reason Most People Never Finish Their Book

When my clients first come to me, they have often overcomplicated the process thinking they need endless research or perfect inspiration.

The good news? You don’t need to figure it all out at once - you just need a proven structure.

The 5-Step Blueprint to Simplify Your Writing Process

Over the course of novel writing, I’ve honed my step-by-step framework into what I call the 5 Day Book Blueprint. I use it every time because writing without it leads to frustration and self-doubt.

The thing I love most about the blueprint is that I can test my story idea before wading into the enormous task of writing a full manuscript.

Writers are imaginative people and often have many ideas for a book - but not every idea has the legs to support a full manuscript which is why I like to test my ideas first.

To do this, I filter my idea through four key questions. Only once I’m satisfied with the answers, do I pursue it. It gives me so much more confidence when I do start writing.

Here are some other elements of my 5-Day Book Blueprint:

  1. Clarify Your Book Idea – I show you how to nail down your genre, audience, and big idea.

  2. Develop Compelling Characters – Creating characters is an art form and I show you what you need to identify early on so readers will feel connected.

  3. Build a Simple Story Structure – Map out key plot points so you’re never staring at a blank page.

  4. Create a Writing Plan That Fits Your Life – Small, consistent steps beat sporadic bursts of inspiration.

  5. Get Started Without Overthinking – Overcome perfectionism and start writing with confidence.

Why This Works (And Why Other Methods Fail)

There is so much writing advice out there - I know this because when I wrote my first novel, The Good Mother, I scoured the internet to try and piece it all together.

What I found was most writing advice was too vague or too complex - my framework gives you just enough structure to stay on track while keeping your creativity flowing.

The 5-Day Book Blueprint is also designed for busy people who don’t have hours a day to write. With two kids, a job and a household to run, I know the pain of trying to fit it all in.

It Doesn’t Have To Be Overwhelming
